Harriet O’brien, the Celebrant

‘We’re really glad that we chose you to do the ceremony, we felt you really got us and that was reflected in how personal the ceremony was. Thank you.’

Twenty years ago I had a Humanist wedding in my parents’ back garden. It was a beautiful day and I was moved and touched by the eloquence and sincerity of the celebrant who married us. Since then my work in the public sector has helped me develop the experience in working with people, public speaking and organisation skills which I now bring to my role as a celebrant.

I love so many different parts of being wedding celebrant:

  • Helping the couple tell their story
  • Writing with poetry, humour and a sense of occasion
  • Leading the ceremony on the day
  • Helping both the couple and the guests feel looked after, welcome and in safe hands.

Every wedding I conduct is delivered with warmth, humour and a genuine sense of delight in the occasion and affection for those involved.

We had a wonderful day and the ceremony was very personal, intimate and quite magical, thank you again.’

You do not need to be a Humanist to have a Humanist celebration. You might simply want a wedding script that is personal to you, tells your story and includes vows that are based on your individual ideas of love and commitment. While religious faith is not part of a Humanist wedding, I am happy to help you include elements of your different cultures and beliefs to reflect the importance of your family and background on your special day.

Humanist weddings can take place anywhere, from a back garden to a beach, and the script for each one is individually written for the couple. I will work jointly with you through the planning, preparation and delivery of your ceremony. Afterwards I will give you a commemorative copy of the entire ceremony, including the contributions of all your speakers, for you to keep and treasure.

‘The ceremony was completely perfect and everything we wanted it to be. You were wonderful and everyone we spoke to told us how much they enjoyed it. Thank you, thank you. We just want to do it all again next weekend!’

I am delighted to marry straight and gay couples across Hertfordshire and North/Central London. I am also available for weddings abroad. If you would like to discuss your wedding needs informally, without obligation, either by phone, by e-mail or over coffee, please do not hesitate to contact me.
