Pat Winslow, the Celebrant

Pat Winslow - 01993 704346

Many years ago I decided I would become a celebrant for the BHA. The experience of an absolutely brutal religious funeral left me reeling. Thankfully, this was followed by several heartwarming and, oddly, life-affirming Humanist funerals.

Several years later, here I am, repaying the debt. I’m not just doing funerals. I also do baby namings and welcomings as well as weddings. All significant milestones are worthy of a ceremony. If you have an idea you want to explore with me, just get in touch.

I’ve been training indirectly for celebrancy since I was in my twenties. I was an actor for twelve years. I left the theatre in 1987 to make space for my writing. Since then I’ve had seven poetry collections published. My fiction also appears in a number of anthologies and fiction magazines. I’ve worked as a writer in residence in a prison and various hospitals and I run writing workshops from time to time in schools and community centres. You can see some of the work I do if you click on my website opposite.

I’m interested in how we as human beings make sense of our lives. I’m interested in how we pass things on from generation to generation, how we learn to be friends, good neighbours, good parents, good partners. I’m equally fascinated by how we get things wrong! Humanity is complex.

I come from a tradition of Humanist thinking. My great-grandfather was an admirer of Robert Ingersoll. He had this to say:

This day shall be mine. From the first gray streak of its early dawn till the last golden ray of its setting sun melts away on the horizon of the West, it shall belong to me.

With charity for all, I will go my way, following the dictations of my own conscience; and strive with all my power to lift my fellow-man from the darkness that surrounds him.

I will live so that should tomorrow dawn, I may look upon to-day with a feeling that I have added my humble mite to the cause of Justice and Humanity.

And it shall bring me much joy.
– Thomas Heath Flood

That’s not a bad philosophy.

And here’s my motto: Carpe diem. Seize the day! But don’t just seize it – make it count.

I conduct ceremonies throughout Oxfordshire, Gloucestershire, Buckinghamshire, Berkshire and occasionally beyond this area. I will consider a special request to work further afield and am happy to discuss this with you.

Mary Langford, the Celebrant

Mary Langford -

Hello,

My name is Mary-Jane and I am an accredited Wedding Celebrant with the British Humanist Association. I am currently residing in South Staffordshire but I grew up in the West Country and slowly moved north.

I come from a very large family and maintain old fashioned values in morality, family, community and loyalty.

My spare time is filled with charity event organizing, motorcycling, reading, belly dancing and my family. I am very lucky to have a wonderful friend network from many different backgrounds and I love to socialize and meet new people.

I became a celebrant after having my own Humanist Wedding, I wanted to give everyone the chance to have the gift of a wedding that was more than just a nice dress, or expensive venue. A wedding that would tug at the heart strings, make people laugh and make people cry with joy. Memories of a very special day that nobody can take away from you.

Even though I am based in the midlands I travel up and down the M5 corridor on a regular basis and I am willing to work anywhere down the west side of the country. If you are planning your wedding at a rally I will be more than happy to travel anywhere in the uk on bike, trike or car.

So whether you want to get married in your back garden with close family and friends or if you prefer to tie the knot at a biker rally in front of hundreds, the choice is completely yours.

I will write a ceremony which is unique to yourselves, throwing in some humor and personal touches bringing out the true meaning of your relationship and providing a day that will always remain in your hearts.

Your wedding, your way, please let me help you make a special memory.

As an extremely creative and open-minded Celebrant I will help you to think outside the box to achieve a unique, heartfelt, and deeply personal celebration of marriage through a truly meaningful and memorable ceremony.

I am here to facilitate and coordinate every aspect of your ceremony and to help you to confidently express yourselves through your ceremony choices within a coherent and beautifully formed script.

I live in rural Gloucestershire on the edge of the Cotswolds, closely bordering both Oxfordshire and Wiltshire; so I am conveniently situated to serve nearby towns Swindon, Oxford, Gloucester, Cheltenham and Reading, as well as the scrumptious villages across the Cotswolds. I love working up to and around Birmingham where I grew up and most of my family still live. I also serve venues in Hampshire and Dorset, where we love to spend time as a family as often as possible; and in and around beautiful Bath where we have close friends and happy memories as a couple.
